Overview


As a Product Design Intern on the Growth team at Coinbase, I was initially tasked with revamping Coinbase Learn on the logged-out web (coinbase.com). Noticing that the logged-out app experience hadn’t been updated in a long time, I took the initiative to expand the scope of my project to include it as well.


To drive both sign-ups and long-term engagement, I introduced Daily Bytes—a feature that delivers bite-sized, educational crypto insights. Designed to bring users back daily, Daily Bytes turns the logged-out experience into a habit-forming entry point for learning and deeper platform engagement.

As a result of this project, I helped set a repositories of ideas for the logged out app experience and Coinbase Learn.

HOW MIGHT WE

How might we use gamification to make learning about crypto more fun and encourage users to engage and sign-up?

The problem


Through a series of in-depth user interviews, I uncovered a common pain point shared by both new and experienced crypto traders: the challenge of keeping up with the rapidly evolving market. Both expressed a need for streamlined access to relevant news and clearer insights into the trends driving price movements.


For new traders, the volume of information felt overwhelming, making it difficult to distinguish signal from noise. Experienced traders, on the other hand, highlighted the difficulty of staying ahead of emerging narratives and identifying the underlying macro factors influencing market sentiment.

The problem


Through a series of in-depth user interviews, I uncovered a common pain point shared by both new and experienced crypto traders: the challenge of keeping up with the rapidly evolving market. Both expressed a need for streamlined access to relevant news and clearer insights into the trends driving price movements.


For new traders, the volume of information felt overwhelming, making it difficult to distinguish signal from noise. Experienced traders, on the other hand, highlighted the difficulty of staying ahead of emerging narratives and identifying the underlying macro factors influencing market sentiment.

The logged-out app currently serves as a static price-checking tool, offering limited value beyond what competing platforms provide.

Applying Proven Gamification Principles.

I studied other education platforms that effectively utilize gamification, such as Duolingo, and identified key design principles to inform this project.

Time sensitive ⏱️

Content is available for a limited time, creating urgency to check in daily, fostering a habit.

Digestible content 🍫

The content should be simple and easy-to-understand to reduce cognitive load and keep users engaged.

Challenge/Obstacle 🤺

Obstacles such as timed tasks or limited opportunities to succeed engage users and provide a sense of achievement.

Purposeful rewards 🌟

Rewards should be straightforward, relevant, and clearly tied to user progress or goals.

Solution


Offer contextualized news analysis to empower users with actionable insights —helping them make more informed decisions in a market where narratives and macro trends can rapidly shift the landscape.

User goals → Keep up with what is going in crypto/get validation in their decisions in a lightweight, low commitment manner.

Product goals → Establish Coinbase as the place to check on what's going on in crypto.

Offering value up-front before pushing sign-ups
Daily Bytes would be positioned at the top of the Learn section on the logged-out app, as it offers shorter, bite-sized content, whereas the Learn section requires a greater time commitment and caters to users with a specific intent to deepen their knowledge.

Concise and relevant
Once users enter Daily Bytes, they can swipe through the top crypto stories of the day, each accompanied by a "Why it Matters" section for added context and relevance. A price chip associated with each news piece will link directly to the corresponding asset detail page.

User goals → Test their knowledge in a fun, low-effort way — turning passive reading into active learning.

Product goals → Reinforce engagement and retention by encouraging daily return behavior and deeper understanding of crypto through lightweight interactivity.

Fun and challenging
Users will encounter various types of quiz questions accompanied by a timer that introduces a gamified challenge. Regardless of whether the user answers correctly or incorrectly, an explanation will follow each question to reinforce learning and provide valuable insights.

REWARDS

Incentives can have different mechanisms
Once users have completed the quiz, they can earn points. To claim these points, they will be prompted to sign up, creating an opportunity to convert engaged users into registered ones. I explored various incentive mechanisms to make the rewards system compelling, including the ability to redeem points for merchandise, crypto of their choice, or cash rewards. For added engagement, users could earn bonus rewards by maintaining a 7-day streak of daily quiz completions, encouraging consistent interaction with the platform.

After learning the prevalence of breast cancer, I reached out to an oncologist and five patients in Thailand who were willing to share more details about their experience with the drains post their surgery. These interviews consisted of 30-minute Zoom and phone calls, where I listened to their stories and guided the discussions to focus on their struggle with the drain log.
